Breaking News: The SAT Goes Digital! ๐
In a significant leap forward, the SAT is transforming into a digital experience. This change brings several crucial updates and enhancements that could reshape the way you approach this important standardized test. Let's dive into what's changing and what remains the same as the SAT evolves into its digital form.
The Shift to Digital
One of the most notable changes is the mode of test-taking. Say goodbye to the traditional paper-and-pencil SAT; the digital SAT will be exclusively administered via tablets or laptops. If you don't have access to a personal or school-issued device, don't fretโtest day provisions will ensure you have what you need to take the exam.
Shortened Testing Time
Time is of the essence, and the digital SAT understands that. With shorter sections and a new section-adaptive format, the test duration shrinks to a nimble two hours, down from three.
Calculator for the Math Section
Math can be daunting, but the digital SAT is here to help. You're now allowed to use a calculator throughout the entire math section. Whether you bring your own approved calculator or use the built-in onscreen graphing calculator, you'll have the tools you need to excel.
Streamlined Reading Passages
Say goodbye to lengthy reading passages. The digital SAT features shorter, more manageable ones, each tied to a single question. This streamlined approach promises quicker and more straightforward reading and analysis.
Adaptive Sections
Both the Verbal and Math sections of the digital SAT will contain two modules. The twist? The difficulty of the second module depends on your performance in the first. If you ace the first module, brace yourself for more challenging questions in the second. Conversely, if you struggle a bit, the second module will offer questions of varying difficulty.
Rapid Score Delivery
Waiting for your SAT scores can be nerve-wracking. With the digital SAT, that waiting period shrinks from weeks to just a few days. Quick access to your score report means you can promptly assess your performance and make informed decisions about your next steps.
What Remains the Same
While many aspects of the SAT are evolving, some key elements will remain consistent:
Content and Skills: The digital SAT will continue to assess the same essential content and skills needed for college and career readiness.
Test Location: You'll still take the digital SAT at a school or test center with a proctor present; there's no option for at-home testing.
Scoring Scale: The familiar 1600-point scale will stay in place, ensuring a direct correspondence of scores between the digital SAT and the paper-and-pencil version.
Accommodations: Students with accommodations will continue to receive support from the College Board.
Getting Ready for the Digital SAT
As you gear up for the digital SAT, remember that preparation is key. The College Board will release official practice materials, including full-length digital practice tests, in the fall of 2022. In the meantime, stay sharp on math concepts and reading comprehension. Consider setting realistic score goals based on your target schools and create a study plan to achieve them.
Keep in mind that the digital SAT won't be administered in the U.S. until spring 2024, giving you ample time to prepare and take the paper-and-pencil version if needed.
